Robben Island
Robben Island was previously used as a prison from the early days of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) up until 1996, where it was later declared as a world heritage site and museum. Their tours include a walk through the old prison, 45-minute bus ride around the island with commentary on the various places of note and the church used during the island’s stint as a leper colony.
Boulders Penguin Colony
The Boulders Penguin Colony is another one of Cape Town’s top tourist destinations and is home to about 3000 African penguins. A boardwalk runs from the Boulders Visitor Centre at the Foxy Beach end of the protected area – part of Table Mountain National Park – to Boulders Beach, where you can get down on the sand and mingle with the waddling penguins.
